Rebel®

The Paradigm Rebel tool is a cutting-bed removal device featuring streamlined, patented integrated cutting blades that lift cuttings from the low side of the wellbore in directionally challenging wells.

Poor hole cleaning, if left unaddressed, can cascade into multiple operational challenges. Cutting buildup often results in significant non-productive time spent on hole cleaning and back-reaming operations.
Paradigm Rebel tools effectively remove drill cuttings from the wellbore, resulting in a cleaner hole, improved drilling efficiency, and a reduced risk of stuck pipe in horizontal or highly deviated extended-reach (ERD) wells.

The Paradigm Rebel tool provides a proven solution for wells with a history of cuttings buildup and associated operational challenges. Ideal candidates for the Rebel tool include wells with complex trajectories, long horizontal sections, and extended-reach drilling (ERD) profiles where effective hole cleaning is a persistent challenge.

The Rebel tool is also highly effective in horizontal or deviated wells drilled at high instantaneous rates of penetration (ROP). Under high ROP conditions, available flow rates are often insufficient to transport all generated cuttings to surface, leading to cuttings accumulation along the low side of the wellbore.

Additionally, the Rebel tool can be utilized in wells where rig pump capacity limits the achievable flow rate required for conventional hole cleaning. In these scenarios, the Rebel tool enhances hole-cleaning performance by agitating and re-suspending accumulated cuttings, allowing them to be carried out of the wellbore more effectively.

The Paradigm Rebel tool is engineered to generate a strong spiral flow regime within the annulus, where the induced swirling motion transports cuttings away from the low side of the wellbore and into the flow stream.

By enhancing annular flow dynamics, the Rebel tool significantly improves hole-cleaning efficiency and delivers several secondary benefits. These include reduced rig time during back reaming, minimized circulation time at section total depth, improved overall drilling efficiency, lower equivalent circulating density (ECD) risks, smoother tripping and drilling (T&D) operations, and fewer challenges when running casing to TD.

The Rebel tool is a short tool making it easy to be handled in the rig.

The Rebel tool rotates on the two hard-banded surfaces located on either side of the integral blades, preventing formation damage while effectively removing cuttings buildup from the low side of the wellbore.

FAQ

What is the Paradigm Rebel tool, or Cuttings Bed Agitator, and how does it work?

Rebel is known as either a Cuttings Bed Agitator (CBA) or Cuttings Bed Impeller (CBI).
It enhances cuttings bed removal in deviated wells.

Rebel tools lift cuttings beds and dunes back into the mud flow for more efficient transport to the surface.
This can save time, facilitate increased ROPs and reduce cost.

There are 3 types of hole cleaning regimes. An ERD well may will have all three:

  • 0 – 30° inclination (slip)
  • 30° – 65° inclination (avalanche)
  • 65° – 90°inclination (stationary)

Rebel applications therefore include: ERD, horizontal, highly deviated and even low inclination wells.
A normal hole cleaning approach typically uses: 1) flow 2) string RPM 3) viscous sweeps.

The Paradigm Rebel adds 4) Mechanical agitation.

How:

  • Multiple Rebel tools spaced out along a drill string (based on modeling).
  • Cuttings are transported up the annulus to the next Rebel tool. The process repeats.
  • If rig time is currently wasted with wiper trips, hole conditioning and multiple bottoms up prior to tripping then Rebel can add value.
  • Rebel tools mean larger cuttings arrive at shale shakers – physical evidence that Rebel tools add value – they were removed before being ground to rock flour.

Rebel is a short, one-piece body for high rigidity, better compression performance, and easy racking as part of a stand. With no moving parts, the same connections and hardbanding as your drill pipe – Rebel is just as strong as your drill pipe.

Rebel delivers multiple advantages, including proven cuttings bed lifting capability, increased cuttings size at the surface (+14%), and faster recovery with fewer bottoms-up cycles.

It causes no measured increase in equivalent circulating density (ECD), reduces torque, drag, and pick-up weight, and helps eliminate differential sticking. Additionally, it minimizes or eliminates wiper trips and backreaming, provides enhanced gauge protection, and exhibits minimal tool wear even after +750 rotating hours, leading to overall cost savings and improved efficiency.

Rebel is particularly effective in high-angle or horizontal wells with inclinations greater than 40 degrees, where hole cleaning issues like cuttings beds and dunes are common. It’s ideal for deviated sections, such as 12-1/4″, 8-1/2″, 6-3/4″, and 16″ or 17 ½” sections, and works well in tandem with rotary steerable systems (RSS), motors, and hole enlargement tools. Case studies from offshore Middle East and Latin America show its success in tangent and build sections with synthetic-based or polymer muds.

In Latin America, 6 tools in a 10-5/8″ section delivered 80% higher ROP and 32% more cuttings recovery (49 boxes vs. 37 planned), enabling problem-free trips and casing runs.

In an offshore Middle East project, 18 Rebel® tools in a 12-1/4″ section achieved positive impact on hole cleaning, with lower annular pressure, improved torque and drag, and larger cuttings. A 4 well campaign drilling: anhydrite, shale, marl and limestone.

Rebel has demonstrated significant savings, such as $3.8 USD million and 24 rig days in Latin American 8-1/2″ and 6-1/2″ sections using multiple tools for better hole cleaning and reduced circulation time.

In a Mexican high-angle well, 8 tools completed over 1,000m 12-1/4″ section in 14 hours versus 1.5 days for an offset well, recovering 60 cuttings boxes instead of 49, with no ECD issues, tripping problems, or unexpected repair charges. Delivered over $200,000 USD in cost savings.
