Overview
During offshore pipeline decommissioning, remaining deposits must be fully removed to leave lines clean and ready for cutting or abandonment.
This typically involves flushing out sands, condensates, and wax, often supported by cleaning pig campaigns. When flushing or pigging isn’t possible, such as with full blockages or restricted deposits. Paradigm’s Flexi-Coil® technology offers an alternative solution, safely removing up to 100% of contaminants without the need for vessel or subsea intervention while still meeting required cleanliness standards.
Applications
Flexi-Coil has been deployed on decommissioning campaigns ranging from 4” to 24” pipeline diameters and achieved cleanliness levels of <30ppm in liquid returns to remove a variety of materials including wax, sands and condensate.
In addition, Flexi-Coil has also been used to deploy cured cement plugs to isolate subsea flowlines prior to cutting operations.
Benefits
Deploying Flexi-Coil from the production facility topsides, achieving distances over 10 kilometers into the subsea system gives operators flexibility to conduct decommissioning operations free from the challenges of subsea and vessel based campaigns.
Flexi-Coil’s ability to remove up to 100% of pipeline debris and flush systems to the required fluid cleanliness levels (e.g. <30ppm) ensures that the standard of decommissioning is maintained without the need for any vessel based activity.
FAQ
What is Flexi-Coil®?
Flexi-Coil® is Paradigm’s patented technology for the removal of pipeline blockage and wall deposit materials in hydrocarbon systems.
The technology is a miniaturized flexible coiled tubing system which utilizes a neutrally buoyant composite coil to navigate through topside and subsea bends, reaching extended distances to restore or enhance production.
Flexi-Coil® can pass through over 1000 degrees of cumulative bends, removing the need for any vessel / subsea intervention and giving operators much greater control of their remediation activities.
What type of materials can Flexi-Coil® remove?
Flexi-Coil® has a track record spanning over a decade in removing a wide range of pipeline blockage materials including paraffin waxes, sands, asphaltenes and hydrates globally.
What distances can Flexi-Coil® reach?
Flexi-Coil® can reach distances over 6km / 20,000ft in standard pipeline systems, with added capability to reach in excess of 10km / 33,000ft in some cases.
How much debris can Flexi-Coil remove?
Flexi-Coil® can recover up to 100% of pipeline blockage material, returning the pipeline back to base metal ready for inspection or restarting production as shown from previous projects.
What sizes of pipelines can Flexi-Coil® be used in?
Flexi-Coil® can be used in lines as small as 4” diameter with the largest project to date taking place inside a 24” export pipeline.
Also as Flexi-Coil® is a composite material and neutrally buoyant, there is no risk of causing abrasive wear to the inner-wall or flexible carcass.
