Overview
Isolating specific zones in a well for workover, shut-off, or P&A without mobilising a rig is technically challenging.
Standard wireline plugs cannot pass through completion restrictions to set in larger-diameter casing below, forcing operators to pull the completion — and therefore require a rig — to achieve reliable zonal isolation.
Why It Happens
Well completions typically include restrictions (nipples, landing nipples, perforations) that prevent conventional plug profiles from reaching the desired setting depth. Without the ability to navigate these restrictions, rigless plug setting is limited to standard wireline plug profiles, which may not provide the quality or permanence of barrier required, especially for P&A compliance.
How It Can Be Fixed
Run cement bond logging using Paradigm’s radial bond tool with eight independent radial segments to provide 360° coverage of the cement-casing-formation interface. The log identifies placement gaps, channels, and zones of poor bonding that require remedial squeeze cementing or plug placement to restore well integrity.
